Oooohhh, new Twitter - I like!

via guardian.co.uk

Twitter has unveiled sweeping new changes to the social network in the biggest shake-up of the site since its launch.

The fresh design, dubbed Fly Twitter, will be introduced to the social network's 300 million users in the coming weeks, but new iPhone, Android and TweetDeck apps were released on Thursday.

The new site features redesigned profile pages, and is based around four key areas: Home; Connect; Discover; and Me. Twitter said one of the most significant introductions was its Discover page, which features trending topics and popular discussions from around the web. The Connect tab is home to users' mentions, retweets and new followers.

In a blogpost on Twitter's official website, the fledgling internet firm said the changes are "just the beginning". Twitter has faced a resurgent competition in recent weeks, with Facebook and Google+ both grappling for users' time and attention with a slew of new features.

The Woman On The Left

Media_httpmediasocial_kpvna

Today I watched a special online event, the birth and growth of a Twitter hash tag. This came about whilst watching Hugh Grant's compelling testimony at the Levesen Enquiry. The actor started trending on Twitter almost as soon as he took the stand, but not long after a new hash tag rose to the top - #thewomanontheleft.

This was because a woman in a beige suit, seated to the left of the screen seemed to be gazing longingly in Grant's direction. I noticed this before I noticed it trending on twitter to be honest, so it seems I wasn't the only one. As a result some very amusing tweets started coming through about this mystery woman. That's why I love Twitter, it's real time observational humour. (Watch it whilst putting up with a shit programme like the X-Factor, you'll see what I mean).

The woman was identified by Twitter users as Carine Patry Hoskins, a Cambridge-trained lawyer with the Landmark Chambers firm and a junior council with the Levesen Inquiry.

Lord Judge - Idiot

Media_httpstaticguimc_xvhfi

Attempts to identify a famous footballer hiding behind a privacy injunction have spiralled into an online battle over freedom of speech, as internet users responded to high court action by repeatedly naming him on Twitter.

The high court granted a search order against the US-based microblogging site on Friday as the lord chief justice, Lord Judge, warned that "modern technology was totally out of control" and called for those who "peddle lies" on the internet to be fined. The attempt to compel Twitter to identify those responsible for the breaches comes after a number of its users earlier this month purported to reveal the name of the player who allegedly had an affair with the model Imogen Thomas.
